Letter: Will the wealthiest share in the sacrifice?
By: Philip M. Mouch, Moorhead
Chris Christie, governor of New Jersey, spoke to the Republican National Convention of hard truths: “Our problems are big, and the solutions will not be painless. We all must share in the sacrifice. Any leader that tells us differently is simply not telling the truth.”
I wonder if Mitt Romney intends to have the wealthiest Americans share in the sacrifice, or will they continue to receive tax cuts? Will corporations – which Romney declared were people, too – also share in this sacrifice?
Instead, we are told by the Republicans that the wealthy and the corporations are the job creators who need tax breaks and reduced regulation, while the poor and middle class must suffer reduced services and fewer protections.
Christie insists that any leader who doesn’t admit that we must all share in the sacrifice is lying. I submit that the Republicans are running on a platform of lies based on Christie’s own criterion.
